If you dream of becoming a registered engineer in the UK, then the word UK-SPEC must be a buzzword for you. What it is and how it is relevant to you? You must be looking answer to this question. If so, then you are at the right place.

Here, we will not only tell you about UK-SPEC, but we will also familiarize you with the whole registration process and the registration authority. So, read the whole blog to the end.

What is UK-SPEC?

The full form of UK-SPEC is the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment. It explains the requirements that you need to meet to get registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) ,or Engineering Technician (EngTech). It also includes activity examples that show the necessary competence and commitment.

Each of the registration titles needs a demonstration of five broad areas of competence and commitment:

1.   Knowledge and understanding

2.   Design, development and sorting out engineering problems

3.   Responsibility, leadership and management

4.   Communication and interpersonal skills

5.   Professional commitment

The following is the professional registration process:

The professional registration process is divided into the five steps given below:

1.   You need to join a professional engineering institution:

The first step for those engineers and technicians who are wishing to apply for registration is to join a professional engineering institution that is licensed to evaluate candidates for professional engineering registration. Alternatively, you may go for joining a Professional Affiliate of the Engineering Council. Some of these organizations have agreements to register their members using a licensed institution. Among the countless benefits of joining is the help that the institutions provide to help you in working for registration.

2.   Let your institution know you are planning for a professional title:

You should tell your institution that you want to apply for professional registration with the Engineering Council. Their staff will be enabled to see your qualifications, training and experience and give you advice on which title you are perfect for and whether any extra learning or experience is necessary for you. Some of them may also assist you in finding a mentor.

3.   Record your professional development:

For gaining and maintaining professional registration with the Engineering council, you have to record your professional development. It provides a body of proof of your qualifications, activities and experience for you to draw on when you are ready to apply for the title you have chosen.

4.   Assessment (the professional review):

The assessment process for registration is called the professional review. It begins with a written application, which may be different as per the requirements of your institution. Your institution will give you all you need to know. For IEng and CEng registration, there is also a professional review interview.

After your institution has verified that you satisfy the criteria, it will submit a registration form to the Engineering Council from your side.

5.   Registration certification:

When receiving your registration from your institution, the Engineering Council will verify and process your application, and you will be added to the national register. It normally takes between 1 and 3 weeks. You will then get your registration pack, which includes a certificate showing your title. After that, you can start to use your post-nominal letters to show your professional status.

At this moment, you can also download the related registrant logo to use it on your business cards, stationery and email signature.

The Engineering Council:

The Engineering Council is the regulatory body for the UK engineering profession. It sets and maintains globally recognized standards of professional competence and commitment. The better you know the Engineering Council UK-SPEC, the easier it will be for you to have registration. If you are not, then hiring a UK-SPEC expert is wise.
