PEO Work Experience Eligibility Criteria
Are you an engineer with a keen desire to work in Ontario (Canada)? If yes, you must show sufficient work experience, which is a major requirement. Taking this fact into account and to help you, we have written this article to let you necessary things related to the PEO work experience. So, read this thoroughly.
Experience
eligibility criteria:
You need to demonstrate a minimum of 48
months of verifiable, acceptable engineering work experience. Out of which, a
minimum of 12 months need to be attained in a Canadian jurisdiction under the
supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
You may be provided a maximum of 12 months of
experience credit for a post-graduate engineering degree or degree in the same
engineering discipline as your undergraduate degree. You may also be qualified
for up to 12 months of pre-graduation engineering experience providing that the
experienced is attained after completing half of your undergraduate studies,
and is documented by your supervisor. You can find pre-graduation experience
forms on the PEO website.
Acceptable
engineering work experience:
The acceptable experience complements your
academic engineering training and builds on the knowledge you earned in
university. Activities must consist of engineering design, design modifications/review
or problem-solving requiring engineering analysis. This experience also needs
to provide for the development of judgment, responsibility, communication
skills and self-confidence.
We have provided below the five elements of
acceptable PEO work experience for an engineering licence. Substantial exposure
to the first two, ‘Application of Theory’ and ‘Practical experience’ is
compulsory while a responsible exposure to the remaining elements is enough. A
complete lack of exposure to any one of these areas may make you ineligible for
licensure.
Application of theory: Analysis, synthesis,
design, devising testing methods and implementation methods.
Practical experience: function of
components as a part of a larger system, limits of practical engineering, the importance
of time in the engineering process, knowledge and understanding of codes, laws,
regulations and standards.
Management of engineering: scheduling,
planning, budgeting, project control, supervision and risk evaluation.
Communication skills: oral presentations,
written work and presentations to the general public.
Social effects of engineering: determining
the benefits or value of the engineering work to the public, putting
appropriate safeguards in place, the relationship between the public and the
engineering activity and the public and the role of regulatory agencies.
All of the above-given factors are
considered when evaluating the final PEO Engineering Experience
Record and the application for licensure. The simple time is not
enough; the quality of the work experience is very important.
How
you need to create your PEO Work Experience Record:
To help you with the PEO review and assist
you in ensuring that your Experience Record gives adequate information, you
need to organize your record in the way below:
Fill up the Experience Record Form, which
must include the company name, location and employment dates (month and year).
Periods of absence from employment (unemployed, traveling) must also be listed
with dates; and
For each position regarding which you are
reporting give the authority a small paragraph with a description of your job
responsibilities with an emphasis on your engineering duties; and
Describe how the work experience attained
in that position satisfies each of the five criteria (application of theory,
practical experience, engineering management, communication skills and
knowledge of the social implications of engineering).
