APEGS CBA (Competency-Based Assessment)

Before you know about the APEGS CBA or Competency-Based assessment, you need to know that competencies are those skills, knowledge, abilities, motivations, or traits that can be observed and measured. They all are required for professional registration as an engineer.

You need to show them using your actions or behaviors. CBA is the assessment of these competencies to make sure whether a candidate is eligible for registration as a professional engineer or not.

What is the APEGS CBA framework?

34 competencies from any of your previous work experience. It is different from the system where you need to describe work experience within specific time frames.

·        In a group of 7 categories.

·        Offers one example per competency.

·        Indicators for each competency: guidance on example content that will show the competency.

·        Rating scale between 0 and 5.

·        Online submission: Interim and Final.

The Interim submission takes place at nearly the two-year mark, and it includes a minimum of 3 of the 34 competencies. When the Interim submission competencies are passed, they are complete and are necessary for the final submission.

How can the APEGS CBA benefit you?

You will be more confident, as you will have a clear of what the requirements are and if you or not meet them even before submitting your work experience. The two reasons for this are that the requirements are more thoroughly given with indicators, and there is an explicit rating scale that you, validators and the assessors can utilize.

The reporting process is all online. You enter your information in the appropriate boxes and validators get an automatic mail with a link to access the system to rate and review the competency examples.

The APEGS competency assessment authority is notified, and it assigns its assessors directly within the system. Evaluators log into the same system and rate the submission. Every entry is available for download at any time as a PDF.

To whom does APEGS CBA apply?

It applies to:

·        Professional engineer applicants (engineers-in-training)

·        You will utilize the new CBA system if, as of Jan 1, 2019, you are either:

·        A current engineering-in-training; not submitted any experience reports, or

·        Have applied to APEGS as an engineer-in-training on or after Jan 1, 2019.

·        You are provided with the choice to utilize the current or new system if, as of Jan 1, 2019:

·        You are a current engineer-in-training having submitted one or more experience reports.

·        You are motivated and invited to move to the online CBA system even if you have already submitted a minimum of one experience report on the existing system.

Knowing about a system and submitting your experience competency report via this are two different things. A professional will guide you through each and everything so that you can prove your competency as an engineer much better for registration.
